NHS England Website Design & Development

The NHS has been a pilar of the nation for three quarters of a century. To celebrate this phenomenal feat, NHS England planned to launch a microsite on which employees could submit photos for a celebratory NHS75 competition.

With a new requirement outside their expertise, they asked FUJIFILM UK for creative ideas and support. From this foundation, BRIGHT were briefed to make the ideas a reality and to design and deliver a user-generated content campaign microsite.

    NHS England Website on Telephone

There were two phases in bringing this exciting idea to life. First, there was an immediate need for a subdomain for both competition details and a secure entry portal, as well as a backend content management system to moderate entries. Second, looking ahead to a post-competition timeline, the website design had to be flexible in order to display winners and shortlisted entries.

    What we did

After taking on both NHS England and FUJIFILM UK’s ideas, limitations, timeline and special requirements, our design team created a visual framework for website development. Our digital team rolled out our own custom data capture system, then began modifying it to meet client needs. By using a universally applicable building block with demonstrable success allowed time and costs to be saved.

This system was linked with a tailored frontend page. Knowing the competition was only open to NHS employees, we applied two-phase security, consisting of email domain authorisation than an individual OTP. Fields entrants needed to complete included selection of one of five competition categories.

The backend itself is built with seamless usability in mind, for non-expert moderators. Logins were created for our NHS England clients and they were given a brief introduction to viewing applications and moving them through various stages of shortlisting. There were no complications and the system negated the need for admin elsewhere.

Following final selection, the existing subdomain page was updated with an equally simple and effective layout. Images were pulled through from the data capture system and presented by category in pleasing UX dropdowns and carousels. We worked with the data management and the image file sizes to ensure that page load times would be minimal.

On-page design and content remained important throughout as on brand designs were essential in the brief. We worked closely to NHS England’s established brand identity and ensured that the site met all accessibility regulations. This is always a consideration of our website design and development teams, and each of the WCAG 2.1 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) standards were met precisely.

    Outcome

We were pleased to see hundreds of NHS England’s heroes submitted their images – and they were able to do so effortlessly. Shortlisting and winner selection was just as easy, completed behind the scenes by our client themselves. The NHS75 website still exists today as a FUJIFILM UK subdomain, celebrating competition winners and serving as a long-lasting snapshot of NHS England at this important 75-year milestone.
